HD Renewable Energy Co., Ltd. (HDRE, 6873), through its ZEBRE platform, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Greensteel Australia to establish a long-term renewable energy partnership supporting the development of renewable-powered green steel production in Australia.
The collaboration will draw on ZEBRE’s 437MW renewable energy portfolio in South Australia, together with its battery storage and dispatch capabilities, to support Greensteel Australia’s ambition to develop a globally competitive, ultra-low-emissions steel production hub. The partnership is expected to enable greater use of renewable electricity while enhancing power reliability, operational flexibility and cost management for energy-intensive industry.
Under the MOU, ZEBRE plans to leverage its South Australian assets, including the Templers battery energy storage project and the Solar River hybrid solar and storage project, to support the gradual introduction of renewable energy supply to the Australian steelmakers. The partnership also includes plans to explore the development of a 400MW large-scale battery system at the production hub, integrated with behind-the-meter storage and power management systems, to improve renewable power stability and provide greater price certainty as the steelworks scales its future production and energy demand.
Both parties will continue discussions toward definitive agreements and assess future expansion of renewable power supply and storage capacity in line with the development of Greensteel’s Australian steelmaking. The partnership represents an important step in aligning heavy industry revitalisation with large-scale renewable energy infrastructure across the nation.
As large energy users, Australia places increasing emphasis on low-carbon electricity and power resilience, HDRE is also exploring integrated energy solutions for emerging energy-intensive sectors such as AI data centres. These may include renewable power purchase agreements, spot market power procurement, front-of-the-meter storage, and behind-the-meter storage for demand response and energy shifting, supporting large energy users in improving power stability, accessing lower-carbon electricity and managing energy costs.
Through ZEBRE, HDRE will continue to work with Australian partners to integrate renewable energy assets, battery storage projects and power market capabilities. The company will also assess the role of its TAITEN containerised battery energy storage system and other modular infrastructure solutions where they can support reliable, low-carbon industrial growth. Together with partners across green steel and other energy-intensive sectors, HDRE aims to support Australia’s transition toward a more resilient and sustainable energy future and to embed Australia’s sovereign manufacturing capability.
